OVERVIEW OF THE LDS EXAM

What is the LDS?

The Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS) is the oldest continuously existing dental qualification in the UK, awarded by the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS).

LDS 1

LDS Part 1

Application for LDS Part 1 will be available to book online. The online application booking system will be for LDS Part 1 only. Candidates will not be required to submit a paper application form for the LDS Part 1 examination
The single best answer (SBA) and extended matching (EMQ) papers make up Part 1 of the Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS). Candidates must pass both of the Part 1 exams in one sitting in order to move on to Part 2.

LDS Part 2

Candidates must mail their completed Part 2 application form and supporting paperwork in order to sit for the LDS Part 2 examination. Hand-delivered application forms won’t be accepted. Applications that are delivered by hand will not be processed and will be returned.
The LDS Part 2 exam will be administered over two days and is divided into two sections: The "unseen case" exam (based on an objective structured lengthy examination - OSLE model) is a 12-station, 7-minute objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) that is intended to assess candidates' clinical reasoning and diagnosis/treatment planning skills. spanning four cases, each lasting roughly 30 minutes.

LDS Part 3

The LDS Part 3 exam will take place over the course of one day and have just one section: Your practical clinical dental abilities will be put to the test during a 180-minute operational evaluation on a dental manikin.

Exam Strategy planning

Being well prepared for your exams is the best way to overcome stress and anxiety, and gives you the best chance of getting good grades.

PLAN

Work out how much you have to do and the time you have to do it in, then break it down into manageable chunks. Aim to do a few hours of revision each day, and mix up your subjects so you do not get bored.

Manage

Take regular short breaks. Studying for hours and hours will only make you tired and ruin your concentration, which may make you even more anxious. A break every 45 to 60 minutes is about right.

Manage Stress

When you’re not revising, use your spare time to get away from your books and do something active. Exercise is good for taking your mind off stress and keeping you positive, and it will help you sleep better.
